Individual and collective leadership for deliberate transformations: Insights from Indigenous leadership

Deliberately transforming society toward equitable and sustainable futures requires leadership. But what kind of leadership? While the dominant understanding leadership often centers on individual, concept collective is receiving increased attention. Yet, relationship between individual remains elusive has been given limited attention in transformation literature. In this study, I explore how understood enacted an Alaska Native community engaged systems enhanced sustainability. draw Indigenous research, organized through four interrelated analytical lenses: leader, culture, process, integration. find that can be seen as something simultaneously argue relational ontology makes it possible to imagine “individual-collective simultaneity.” discussion, highlight connections emerging theories approaches within “mainstream” pointing potential for bridging disciplines paradigms.
